I am Professor Dr. Adnan Sayar, a specialist in thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. For more than 30 years I have specialized in diseases and surgical treatments of the lungs.
Our current topic is lung cancer. If you smoke, you are over 45 years old, one of your first-degree relatives has been diagnosed with lung disease, you have a constantly worsening cough for more than 15 days, and if you have had bloody sputum at least once, then you should definitely seek advice from pulmonologist and thoracic surgeon.
Lung cancer is an aggressive type of cancer. If cancer is detected in the early stages, it can be very completely treated and a complete cure can be achieved. In some cases, oncological treatment is needed before surgery, and in others, oncological treatment is possible after surgery. However, all of these treatment methods are more effective when the cancer is detected at an early stage. Surgical treatment gives very good results in patients who have no distant metastases that have spread to the lymph nodes and have sufficient respiratory capacity. We urge patients to pay attention to this. As a rule, closed operations are performed. They can be performed using video-assisted thoracoscopic and robotic surgery. Open operations are performed for larger tumors or for tumors that are oncologically unsuitable for closed surgery. Depending on the final stage, additional treatment may be needed.
